A purse of more than $50,000 is at stake today and Sunday for cowboys and cowgirls competing at the 123rd Silver Spurs Rodeo at Osceola Heritage Park.
The rodeo begins at 7:30 p.m. today with a second performance set for Sunday at 2 p.m.
Many local cowboys are expected to compete in the event, which is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA).
Several of the PRCA’s Southeastern Circuit leaders are expected to ride this weekend, including defending summer rodeo all-around champion Brad Hartt, of Sebring.
Hartt, a tie-down roper who won a hand-tooled saddle for winning the Spurs’ all-around championship, is currently fifth in the Southeastern Circuit’s All-Around standings with more than $7,400 in winnings.
Cowboys must enter two or more events to contend for the all-around title.
Steer wrestler Acie Campbell, of Livingston, Ala., is the Southeastern Circuit All-Around leader with $15,214 in earnings.
Three local champions from last summer may compete in this weekend’s rodeo. Tie down roper Jim Clair, of St. Cloud, won in 8.8 seconds last year. He is seventh in the Southeastern Circuit standings.
Kenansville’s Jim Burnett won the saddle bronc title last year (78) points and is currently 11th in the Southeastern Circuit.
Juan Alcazar, of St. Cloud, last year’s bareback champ in 3.5 seconds, is eighth in the Southeastern All-Around standings.
The rodeo competition features barrel racing, saddle bronc, bareback bronc, steer wrestling, tie down roping, team roping and bull riding.
Points accumulated at the Silver Spurs Rodeo can lift participants into the National Circuit Finals Rodeo at Idaho, where leaders from each of the PRCA’s 12 regional circuits will compete for a purse of over $500,000.
Admission is $15 for adults. Children ages 10-under are free with a paying adult. Local government employees with identification receive a $5 discount. Children bringing report cards showing A’s or O’s receive free popcorn and a small soda.
