Florida cowboy Brad Hartt worked his way closer to rodeo’s biggest show last weekend by winning the steer wrestling championship at the 123rd Silver Spurs Rodeo at Osceola Heritage Park.
Hartt, from Sebring, took just 4.2 seconds to pull down his steer Saturday.
Hartt lifted himself to No. 12 in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s all-around standings with total earnings this season of $17,657. All-around entrants must compete in two or more events.
The top 15 cowboys at the end of the year earn a spot in the PRCA’s lucrative National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, where more than $5 million in prize money is up for grabs.
Hartt entered the Spurs Rodeo ranked No. 5 in the PRCA’s Southeastern Circuit all-around standings. The Southeastern Circuit Finals will be in November at Davie. Circuit rodeo champs and the top 12 points leaders for each event advance to the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Utah next spring.
The Southeastern Circuit, which consists of nine southern states, got a boost last week when the Seminole Tribes of Florida provided additional sponsorships, which allows rodeo officials to raise the purse at the Circuit Finals and to pay for the contestant’s entry fees.
Other winners at the Silver Spurs Rodeo were bull rider Gary Brown (91), of Arcadia; tie-down roper Don Coffell (8.4), of Iredell, Texas; bareback rider J.T. Taylor (81), of Luray, Tenn.; saddle bronc rider Justin Caylor (81), of Livingston, Ala.; team ropers (5.7) Kyle Lawrence, Andalusia, Ala., and Jimmy Tanner, Tifton, Ga.; and barrel racer Lorie Manning (16.87), of Myakka City.
