Poinciana By Lisa D’Cato The community is invited to the Veterans Commemoration Ceremony Friday, July 3, at 11 a.m. at the Poinciana Veterans Memorial, 401 Walnut St.
This event is an annual one in its sixth year and is a well-attended tribute to our veterans. It recognizes a representative veteran from each U.S. war. Special guests include retired Army  Maj. Gen. Craig B. Whelden.
New this year and a great addition to the event, the Vietnam Tribute Moving Wall will be on display inside the Poinciana Community Center during the ceremony and throughout the holiday weekend. The wall is being brought to the Poinciana area through the combined efforts of the Association of Poinciana Villages and the Veterans Club of Solivita.
For the first time, a community covenant will be signed to represent Poinciana’s commitment to support our military personnel and their families. This is Poinciana’s pledge to make sure that everything will be well on the home front while the men and women in uniform are making sure the country is safe.
Take time to pay tribute to our veterans. Attend the 11 a.m. ceremony July 3. If unable to attend, stop by the Poinciana Community Center, 395 Marigold Ave., and see the Vietnam Tribute Moving Wall on display July 3-5.

Another area tradition at the Veterans Commemoration Ceremonies, Community Updates, and groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting ceremonies has been the Discovery Division Naval Sea Cadets. In the past, Discovery Division was sponsored by Discovery Intermediate School. As of June 30, our Sea Cadets will no longer have a “home,” as Discovery no longer will sponsor them.
The Sea Cadets are in need of a new sponsor and location for their drill weekends. During these weekends, they have classroom training and military drills. The space they are looking for is to be used for training, storage and office space. If possible, the site would have an office for two or more and a large storage room to house equipment. The items stored include uniforms, drill rifles, flags and camping equipment. The space they once had at Discovery was 20 feet by 20 feet.
