The Kissimmee Police De-partment’s three canine teams have completed the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s annual certification.
Each year, FDLE requires police canine teams to pass a series of tests in order to maintain their certification. The tests include off-leash obedience with both verbal and hand commands, apprehension and release exercises by voice commands, under gunfire apprehension and release commands, handler protection and building and area searches.
The certification was conducted at the Kissimmee Police Department’s range and evaluated by members of the Osceola County and Orange County sheriff’s offices. Kissimmee’s three canine teams all passed their evaluation and have received their certification for another year.
“A trained police dog is a very valuable tool for a police department,” Police Chief Fran Iwanski said in a press release. “The Kissimmee police canine teams train to maintain peak performance, not only for certification, but to assist with protecting our citizens.”
