St. Thomas Aquinas Medical Clinic and Catholic Charities are the recipients of an $8,320 grant from the St. Cloud Citizens Foundation.
The St. Cloud City Council recently recognized the clinic for providing medical care for those who have lost their insurance.
The clinic, which recently celebrated its third anniversary, is sponsored by St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in St. Cloud and operates under the umbrella of the Diocese of Orlando in conjunction with Catholic Charities of Central Florida.
More than 75 doctors and 150 nurses and other medical professionals have serviced the medical needs of some 3,100-plus patients including adults and children.
“We’d love to have more doctors and other medical professionals to help with the extra patients that are looking for help,” Dr. Peter Morrow, who heads up the medical staff at the clinic, said. “Doctors volunteer only once every six weeks so we can always use a few more hands.”
The new medical school in Orlando is using the clinic for medical interns as well. In fact, there is a waiting list of interns trying to get involved with the clinic because of all the good work being done there, evidenced by some terrific stories from their patients, according to a clinic press release.
“One of our patients named Debra came to see Dr. Morrow and he discovered a lump in the back of her throat,” Clinic Office Manager Kelly Bender said “He referred her to Dr. Trinh who has an ENT and she did a biopsy and discovered squemous cell carcinoma.  We referred her to Moffitt Cancer Center to an oncologist who is taking care of her.”
“Another young man had a very high PSA,” Bender said.  “We referred him to Dr. Castro who is an urologist.  He did a biopsy and discovered he has prostate cancer. He is now on his way to Moffitt Cancer Center for treatment.”
