St. Cloud Fire Rescue Chief Bill Johnston was recognized as the Osceola County Veterans Council 2011-12 Citizen of the Year April 21 during the council’s annual reception in Kissimmee.

The council has been recognizing citizens of the year since 2003 for their steadfast dedication in supporting Osceola County veterans.

When the council finds itself needing community support, Johnston answers the call without hesitation, according to a city of St. Cloud press release.

“I was truly surprised by this honor,” Johnston said. “I am very flattered to receive this recognition.”

Although he is not a military veteran, Johnston’s son, brother, father and grandfather were all military veterans. Johnston said he has an extreme amount of respect for all the sacrifices made by veterans and their families, the press release stated.
