City coordinating largest swimming lesson at pool

The City of St. Cloud Parks and Recreation’s aquatics staff is coordinating St. Cloud’s participation in The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson June 14 at 10:45 a.m., at the Chris Lyle Aquatic Center, 3001 17th St.

This is the second year in a row that St. Cloud will participate in the event that teaches beginners how to be safer in and around the water.
“We will be teaching and refreshing the skills of those present, making everyone safer, combating drowning, and attempting to break the Guinness World Record,” said Aquatics Specialist Beth Walters. “Last year, we did pretty good; we had 27 participants. But, this year, we’re hoping to at least double that number. This is such a fun and important event because learning to swim is a process and this is definitely a great way for beginners to start the process of focusing on water safety.”
The lesson plan includes safety, entry, breathing/submerging, floating and strokes. All ages are welcome. For more details, visit www.worldslargestswimminglesson.org or call 407-957-7243.
Poppy Day,
Emergency Medical Services Week proclaimed in St. Cloud
St. Cloud Mayor Rebecca Borders presented two proclamations during a regular council meeting May 24 at City Hall.
Borders proclaimed May 28 as Poppy Day and the week of May 20-26 as Emergency Medical Services Week in St. Cloud.
Poppy Day - “Memorial Day is also Poppy Day in St. Cloud,” said Borders. “I urge participation in this commemoration by all citizens who, by such action, will demonstrate their faith in those men and women who died in the cause of liberty and justice throughout the years.”
The poppy is a bright-red memorial flower that is the symbol of the sacrifice of lives in war. The poppy also represents the hope that no sacrifice of lives in war is in vain. This flower was adopted as a symbol of remembrance because it was so widespread on the sites of the battlefields of Europe after World War I.
Emergency Medical Services Week - The emergency medical services system consists of emergency physicians, emergency nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, firefighters, educators, and administrators.
“It is important for the citizens of the city of St. Cloud to learn about our emergency medical services system, including what to do in a medical emergency situation,” said Borders. “Our St. Cloud Fire Rescue personnel are ready to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They engage in thousands of hours of specialized training and continuing education to enhance their lifesaving skills. It is very much appropriate to recognize the value and the accomplishments of emergency medical services providers.”
City of St. Cloud employees recognized for outstanding efforts in building concession stand
City of St. Cloud Building Maintenance Senior Trades workers Mike Depratt and Gabe Masson were named the St. Cloud employees of the month for April. Both employees were recognized during a regular council meeting May 24 at City Hall for their efforts in building the lakefront concession stand in a quick and efficient manner.
The concession stand’s construction required additional work duties for everyone in the building maintenance division. However, Depratt and Masson dedicated themselves to the construction despite cost and time limitations and completed the project under budget and in advance of the required completion date.
“While working on the lakefront concession stand, Mike and Gabe kept the construction area safe and organized with little impact on the walking path and playground areas and answered citizens’ questions,” said Building Maintenance Supervisor Pete Jones. “During construction, they maintained their city commitments and worked an average of 20 to 24 hours a week on the project. These two gentlemen worked through their break and lunch times, in good weather and bad, building a structure that uses as many green techniques as possible. It gives me great pleasure to recognize them as employees of the month.”
