Osceola High sports teams placed third academically among 82 Florida High School Athletic Association Class 7A schools for the 2011-12 school year, and Harmony and Celebration each placed among the top 10.
The Kowboys (68) were one point from tying for second place with Ocala Forest (69) in the Class 7A rankings behind Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (117).
Points are earned according to each athletic team’s academic performance.
Harmony (58) was sixth in Class 7A and Celebration (48) finished eighth.
Osceola High athletes in 10 spring sports compiled team GPAs of 2.95 or better, led by the girls tennis team’s cumulative 3.607 GPA.
The baseball team’s 3.255 GPA was No. 3 in Class 7A. Coach Scott Birchler said five seniors on the baseball team ranked among the top 25 of their graduating class including J.R. Charles (4th,), Bryce Burton (9th), Peter Calilao (10th), Cameron Hindle (12th) and Travis Richardson (25th).
Also ranked among the top 10 in the state in their respective sports were Osceola’s boys tennis team (3.586), boys water polo team (3.356), girls water polo team (3.427), boys weightlifting team (3.099) and flag football team (3.378).
Gateway’s boys tennis team was No. 1 in Class 8A with a 3.777 GPA. The Lady Panthers tennis team was No. 4 (3.785) and the girls track team was No. 7 (3.175).
Harmony had six top 10 teams with softball (3.359), baseball (3.12), girls tennis (3.759), boys tennis (3.469), girls track (3.466) and flag football (3.282).
Celebration’s top 10 spring season teams were flag football (3.579), boys tennis (3.525) and baseball (3.045).
Osceola County Coordinator of Athletics Ryan Adams lauded the performance of the county’s student athletes at Wednesday’s Dean Cherry Coach of the Year banquet.
“It’s an indication of how our coaches and administrators have emphasized academics,” he said.
