The words “hungry” and “child” should never be used in the same sentence. Over 50 percent of Poinciana school- age children qualify for free or reduced lunch in Osceola County. That means these students are provided meals when at school. What happens during summer break?

Hunger is one of the most severe setbacks to the learning process. Lack of nutrition during the summer may set up a cycle of poor performance once school starts again. Hunger may make kids more prone to illness and other health issues.
The Osceola County School District will be participating in the federally-funded Summer Food Service Program. This program is designed to fill that nutrition void and make sure kids can get the good meals they need.  Free, nutritious meals will be provided Monday through Friday. This service begins Monday and ends Aug. 10.
Children and teens age 18 and under may receive breakfast at the Poinciana Community Center, 395 Marigold Ave., from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Lunch is provided from noon to 12:30 p.m. at the Poinciana Academy of Fine Arts, 4201 Rhododendron Ave. It offers breakfast from 8 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.
All children may come in and be fed, no questions asked.

Poinciana Professionals, an on-line based group networking that offers once a month meetings in a local Poinciana business, has a goal of building a community one business at a time. This group also appreciates the importance of building pride and appreciation of the youth in Poinciana. With that in mind, Poinciana Professionals is presenting the Miss Poinciana 2013 Pageant.
The Miss Poinciana 2013 Pageant is the first ever in the community.  Miss Poinciana 2013 pageant will be held July 27. Prior to that, contestants will have several meetings together to practice. These meeting dates will begin the week of June 17. Contestants will be notified by mail.
There are three age divisions in the Miss Poinciana 2013 pageant. Miss Poinciana age is 18 to 25, Miss Teen Poinciana is ages 13 to 17 and Little Miss Poinciana participants must be between 6 to 12 years of age. Anyone who lives in Osceola or Polk Counties who would like to represent Poinciana may apply.
Miss Poinciana 2013 winners will be presented to the community at the second 40th anniversary celebration, a Back-to-School festival at Harmon Park on Aug. 11. Each contestant will receive a participation trophy. Grand prize winners in each category will receive a crown, trophy, sash, $500, $250 and $100 (in age order).
The registration deadline for Miss Poinciana 2013 has been extended to June 20. Application packets are available at Poinciana Starbucks, the Poinciana Community Center and the Boys and Girls Club Poinciana Teen Center.
