Join friends and neighbors for a pre-July 4 recognition presentation.

The Independence Day 2012 Commemoration ceremony will be Tuesday, July 3, at 11 a.m. This event, meant to acknowledge those who fought for our freedom, will honor all Poinciana veterans.

The Association of Poinciana Villages (APV) is sponsoring this event. It will take place at the Poinciana Veteran’s Memorial, 401 Walnut St. (APV Administration building). The guest speaker will be Thomas Chalifoux, colonel, U.S. Army (ret.) Following the ceremony, complimentary hot dogs, potato chips and sodas will be served.

Before you start your July 4 holiday, take some time and recognize the men and women who served valiantly to make sure we can still celebrate it.

July at the Poinciana Branch Library is the coolest place in town. Every Tuesday, from 11 to noon, teens meet at the library. As part of the Summer Reading Program, they share great books and ideas. On Thursday, July 5, at 10 a.m., children in the program are invited to watch an age appropriate movie.

Elementary school children are able to choose from a program on Wednesdays from 3 to 4 p.m. or Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m. Stop by the library to sign your child up for these free and educational programs.

On Tuesday, July 10, the Poinciana Branch Library will be accepting gifts. Not books or cash, just the gift of life. Donate blood and in return you will receive an iron check, blood pressure screening and pulse check. In five business, days donors will receive valid blood type and cholesterol reading. For more information, visit www.cbcsf.org or call 800-357-4483.

The Friends of the Poinciana Library meets at the library on the third Tuesday of every month. The next meeting will be Tuesday, July 17, at 2 p.m. Since 1998, the “friends” have looked to enhance our community library. Through their volunteer work, they have held successful book sales and have secured endowments and bequests. Dues are only $5 annually. Everyone needs “friends,” consider joining.

The Poinciana branch Library is at 101 Doverplum Ave. All library programs are free and open to the public.

It was one year ago today, June 28, 2011, the Rotary Club of Kissimmee South/Poinciana became an official, charted club. Since then, this club has done much good and accomplished many things.

A Family Fun Night was held in November at Pazza Luna Restaurant (this is where the club meets every Friday morning at 7:45 a.m.). Through this first fundraiser, the club was able to contribute $500 to each organization they sponsored this year- The Poinciana Family Y, The Poinciana Teen Center Boys & Girls Club and Project Home. They were also able to contribute toys for Santa’s Helping Hands, a local project developed to insure every child in Poinciana has a toy to open Christmas morning.

The club delivered dictionaries to five local schools- Chestnut Elementary School for Science and Engineering, Poinciana Academy of Fine Arts, Deerwood, KOA and Sunrise Elementary Schools. This effort was part of the Rotary’s Dictionary Project, created so that every third grader was able to own a dictionary.

These great things were accomplished under the leadership of Rotary club president Betty Dobbie. The new Rotary president of the Rotary Club of Kissimmee South/ Poinciana is Jeffrey Goldmacher. We look forward to even more significant achievements for this important civic organization.

The Miss Poinciana Pageant will hold its first session Friday, June 29, at 5:30 p.m. at the Poinciana Community Center, 395 Marigold Ave. This is an opportunity for the contestants to meet and learn what is required of them.

To clear up some rumors and concerns, APV is allowing us the use of the community center for the event and practices. This pageant is being organized by the group Poinciana Professionals. No assessment fees or tax dollars are being used for this event.

June 29 is the final opportunity to register. Please make sure to bring proof of age (this is for girls ages 6 to 25).
