Spend an evening under the stars and enjoy a movie in St. Cloud. There are two to choose from every month.

This is the seventh year for movies at the lakefront, which take place on the second Friday of the month year-round.

“We try to show the most recent PG movie out on DVD,” said Demetrius Chappell, recreation specialist for Parks and Recreation. “On Aug. 10 we will have ‘Dr. Suess’ The Lorax’. It becomes available that week and there is no charge to enjoy it.”

Danny DeVito is the voice of the Lorax, a forest creature who shares the enduring power of hope. Other stars who bring their talents to the film are Zac Efron, Ed Helms, Taylor Swift and Betty White.

The outdoor screen is set up at 1104 Lakeshore Blvd. and the movie starts around sunset, which will be after 8 p.m.

“In case of rain we would try to reschedule for the next Friday,” Chappell said. “We get a couple of hundred people who come out.”

Moviegoers can bring a blanket or chair and their food, although concessions are often available, Chappell said, from local school groups.

On the third Saturday of the month the Dive-in Movie takes place at the Chris Lyle Aquatic Center, 3001 17th St. There is a $1 a person charge.

“This is our second year for these movies,” said Lead Lifeguard Jack Whitaker. “The season runs from March to October and you can watch from around the pool or while you are in the pool. The gates open at 7:30 p.m. and we play some trivia games. The movie begins about an hour later. On Aug. 18 we will show ‘Hook’ with Dustin Hoffman and Robin Williams.”

‘Hook’ is a 1991 fantasy film directed by Steven Spielberg. Hoffman is in the title role. It is a sequel to Peter Pan’s original adventures focusing on a grown-up Peter, played by Williams, who has forgotten his childhood. Julia Roberts plays Tinker Bell. The film was nominated for several Academy Awards.

Whitaker said “Remember the Titans,” a sports drama starring Denzel Washington, is scheduled for Sept. 15.

i“We have a double feature in October for the last movies of the series,” he said. “We have ‘Hocus Pocus’ and ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ on Oct. 6. Since it is getting a little cooler by then we have it scheduled earlier in the month”

“Hocus Pocus” is a fantasy/comedy with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. “Nightmare Before Christmas” is an animated family/fantasy film produced by Tim Burton.
