If you haven’t noticed, Osceola County has been quite busy recently in the economic development department – from luring in the headquarters of a sporting association to new trendy convenience stores. It’s leading to more revenue into the county and more employment .

We say: Keep up the good work.

On Monday, it was announced that the National Senior Games Association announced it would relocate its corporate headquarters to Kissimmee. With this comes the organization’s National Senior Games, which the area will host five times between 2016 and 2025 as part of its agreement with the county.

Kissimmee Convention & Visitor’s Bureau Director Shelley Maccini said the pact with the association to bring their headquarters from Baton Rouge, La. and national athletic competition would provide the area with nearly $120 million in economic impact, and $1.6 million in tourist development tax dollars that now don’t appear on any budget.

Not bad.

Economic development gurus also worked a little magic by securing the Quidditch Cup. Inspired by that high-flying game in the Harry Potter movies, The Quidditch Cup will become a reality April 13-14, 2013, when more than 2,000 athletes and some 20,000 spectators will converge on Osceola County. Several cities were in contention for the world cup, and eventually it was down to Kissimmee and Riverside, Cal., but the Florida locale won out. The event could bring $7 million or more to the local economy, bureau officials said.

Well done.

And let’s not forget some of the recent landings of trendy convenience stores that come with new twists. The new RaceTrac prototype, a much-enlarged convenience store, is more than a place to get a cup of coffee and fill up the gas tank. The first of its kind in Florida, the newest RaceTrac had its grand-opening in Poinciana in July. Not only is the new RaceTrac bigger, brighter and more inviting than the typical convenience store, there are so many food and drink choices that it might take more than five minutes to make that morning coffee purchase.

And then there’s Wawa. Two stores just opened in Osceola County to massive responses. Wawa, which is more restaurant than convenience store, sells everything from quesadillas and smoothies to lobster bisque and New England clam chowder. But it is its hoagie that has made Wawa famous.

We give kudos to those behind the scenes who were able to make all this happen and we hope this is just the beginning for more great things to come.
