Florida Christian College Basketball Coach Jake Deer will be among the guest speakers at the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches Fall Clinic next month at Oviedo High.
Deer, who led the Suns to the NCCAA Division II national tournament in 2011-12, joins former Orlando Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy and former Magic player Jeff Turner and several other college and high school coaches as presenters at the clinic, which is hosted by former Osceola High Coach Ed Kershner.
Gundy was dismissed as the Magic coach after the recent season that saw the team dissolve in turmoil when center Dwight Howard refused to sign a long-term contract extension. He was traded to the L.A. Lakers last week.
Turner, a center for the Magic in the 1990s, now coaches at Lake Highland Prep.
Deer recently announced the signings of three high school players and is optimistic the team again will contend for a Division II national championship.
“We’re returning most of the players from last season. We feel we have a great opportunity to be even better next season,” Deer said.
The team will begin the regular season in October.
