What is unfair
To the Editor:
Working folks do not need to hear a lecture about the definition of fairness followed by a ridiculously lopsided tax increase on the people who can least afford it.
For the record, “rich” has been defined by the Democrats as $250,000 income per year and above. I found the 1 percent solution Frank Iaquinto laid out to be the most laughable idea since Herman Cane shared his tax idea with us in the presidential primary. Before Mr. Iaquinto asks everyone to pay a little more in taxes, plus deny the poorest among us less assistance based on a perception that they are freeloading, it is critical to know and understand how the deficit became such a problem.
It’s hard to be fair in a solution to a problem if you choose to ignore the reasons the problem exists in the first place. Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest, two wars, a prescription drug plan and a no child left behind program all unfunded, to say nothing of corporate tax loopholes you could drive a truck through, a foreign trade policy that stabs the American worker in the back and mindless deregulation that led to a financial disaster all conspired to create our present situation.
The lengthy opinion letter is long on advocating payment from the working class for debt incurred by the wealthiest in our nation and short on acknowledging who made the mess. Part of our taxes go to help people less fortunate than ourselves and older people who can no longer keep up in the workplace, these entitlements, as selfish people like to refer to them as, were enacted after the last Great Depression and are the only reason we keep insisting we are in a recession today.
If you’re really interested in “fair,” the thing to do it would be return to the tax plan in place after WW II under President Eisenhower, when we had an enormous deficit to deal with. Check those tax rates if you’re interested in fairness. Our present system is not fair and Mr. Iaquinto’s “solution” places an additional burden unfairly upon the citizens who can least afford it and more importantly upon the citizens who were least responsible for the debt we face.
I look for leadership in a politician so if they “only do what they think we want and will get them reelected” as Frank stated, then let me be clear when I say it is their fault for being nothing less than a “yes man” when the nation needs courage and leadership. Maybe that’s how we got in so much trouble in the first place allowing so many creepy little hustlers into office who paid more attention to citizens called “corporations.” After all, “corporations are people too my friend,” remember? Let’s be honest about why we’re in trouble otherwise there is no “fair” solution. I do agree with Mr. Iaquinto when he says “trying to argue the term ‘fair or fairness’ is problematic at best and impossible at worst.” But in my opinion the problem only arises when someone tries to game the system to their advantage.

An open letter
To the Editor:
Like most other areas Osceola County is faced with budget cuts while trying to promote new business for the community.
Whether it is a road, new homes or any business the impact on the surrounding areas should be taken into consideration.
Ask yourselves these questions: What effect does it have on the existing homes or businesses and what does it do to the environment.
Keep in mind that your first thought should be to the people that already live here and then move forward with a plan that would serve both interests

Supporters thanked
To the editor:
As one who played a minor part in the successful 9th Congressional District primary election campaign of Todd Long, I want to wholeheartedly thank all those who supported Long with their vote on Tuesday, Aug. 13. Further, those who worked so diligently in this campaign are to be thanked and appreciated as well.
Todd Long’s victory exemplified the fact that voters see him as a candidate with strong, truly American values with the desire to get American back everything for which this great nation stands
