Celebration begins a new era under Coach Ed Meierkort Friday when it travels to Lake Placid to begin the 2012 football season.
The Storm are getting a late start because they did not play a Kickoff Classic. Meierkort arrived too late in the summer for the team to schedule a preseason game, but he said that his team should be prepared for Friday’s opener.
“We had a good workout Saturday. I think we’re in good shape,” the former NCAA Division I coach said.
Meierkort has spent the past month preparing his team, which was winless last season, to compete hard over four quarters.
“Obviously, this is a team coming off a lousy season where they didn’t win a game, so we’ve got to rebuild the kids’ self-esteem,” he said. “We’re going to learn step across the line and compete like men.”
Will Santry, who was the quarterback for the Storm two seasons ago, will start Friday’s game, Meierkort said. Santry threw for 459 yards and three touchdowns two seasons ago.
“I think we’re in pretty good shape at the skill positions. We have some size and some speed there,” Meierkort said.
Johnny Victor, at 6-5 a good target, and Chase Meierkort are receivers, and David Akins and Quentin Lewis are available at running back or the defensive backfield.
Meierkort said that, as much as possible, he wants to stick to a two-platoon system.
“What happens when kids play both ways is that they have a tendency to rest on one side, and that’s usually the offensive side,” Meierkort said.
Lake Placid rolled to an easy win at Celebration last season.
Meierkort said that while there is little he can do to improve the athletic talent of his team, he can employ strategies to make his players as effective as possible.
“It’s up to me to slow the tempo of the game,” he said.
The Storm will visit Poinciana next week before making their home debut Sept. 14 against Lake Minneola.
