Kissimmee firefighters rushed to the scene of a fire Thursday along Vine Street and found a shed abutting a commercial building in flames along with a nearby brush fire, both of which could be the result of arson, authorities said.

The first responding firefighters saw a large column of black smoke as they approached at 1417 E. Vine St. and feared more than just brush was on fire, calling more units to the area, Kissimmee Fire Department Deputy Chief Jeremy Donovan said. Two 250-gallon tanks of propane sitting along the same side of the abandoned building as the burning shed also increased the urgency of the call, Donovan said.

Firefighters also discovered a brush fire in the woods just north of the first fire. Both fires were quickly controlled, but the occurrence of two fires so close together raised suspicions.

“We're taking statements,” Donovan said, adding that the department boasts a “decent arrest rate” for arson cases.

Kissimmee police shut down the eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 192 briefly while firefighters attended to the fire.
