Kissimmee Utility Authority recently announced the winners of its 17th annual student calendar art contest.
Open to Osceola County students in kindergarten through fifth grade, the contest was designed to promote electrical safety and help prevent electrical accidents.
This year, a total of 2,138 entries were received from 27 Osceola County elementary schools, including public, private and charter schools. This year marked the largest number of entries ever received in the annual contest. A panel of judges met and selected 12 entries — one for each calendar month — that will be featured in KUA’s 2011 Calendar of Electrical Safety.
The winners were: second-grade student Jahaziel Serrano, from City of Life Christian Academy; third-grade student Fionna Sosa, from Flora Ridge Elementary; fourth-grade student Anastasia Trejo, from Kissimmee Charter Academy; fifth-grade student Victoria Quezada, from Kissimmee Elementary; fourth-grade student Nicholas Cruz and fifth-grade student Jaimie Hauser, (grand prize) from Michigan Avenue Elementary; fourth-grade student Andrew Joaquin, from Pleasant Hill Elementary; second-grade student Nora Louie from Sunrise Elementary; second-grade student Baily Palmer and fifth grade student Jameelah Patel, from Trinity Lutheran School; fourth-grade student Robert Brea and fifth-grade student Deema Alharthi, from Westside K-8.
This year marks the third consecutive win for Victoria Quezada. In addition, Jaimie Hauser won previously in 2007 and Robert Brea in 2009.
The 12 winning students will have their artwork featured in the 2011 calendar and receive a $100 cash prize. The grand prize winner will have her name and artwork affixed to a KUA bucket truck for one year and be featured on the calendar’s cover.
Jaimie Hauser’s school, Michigan Avenue, will receive $500 in art supplies, and Flora Ridge Elementary will receive $250 in art supplies for submitting the most total entries in the contest.
The calendars will be distributed free of charge in December.
