By definition, basketball coaches look for their point guards to be unselfish playmakers.  Athletes who look to dish first and score second.

Gateway’s point guard, Giovanny Guzmann, fits the definition.  He fits it so well in fact, that he is the Osceola News Gazette Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

Mention the word basketball to Julia Ingler and her face lights up immediately.

A self-proclaimed “gym rat,” Ingler says she would rather play basketball than just about anything in the world. As a junior point guard for Harmony High, Ingler averaged more than 14 points a game and came within one game of leading the Longhorns to their first final four appearance.

Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant once said that, “Everything negative – pressure, challenges – is all an opportunity for me to rise.”

Perhaps no quote better describes Osceola High’s Montana Bass, the Osceola News-Gazette Girls Basketball Player of the Year, an honor she shares with Harmony’s Julia Ingler.

A 5-7 shooting guard/point guard, Bass overcame losing her home in a mid-January fire, but still managed to lead Osceola to a 21-7 record this season.

“It was a pretty horrible,” Bass says of the Jan. 10 fire.

Two thirds of the way through the 2012-13 school year, defending Orange Belt Conference All-Sports champion Harmony (88) holds a big lead over Osceola (80.5).

Harmony has won four of the past five OBC All-Sports championships and looks like a good bet to make it five of six.
