Ordinarily, I’d address you as Mr. Obama or Mr. President, in deference to your office. But we need to have us a guy-to-guy chat here, so I hope you’ll excuse the familiarity, because I just have to ask:

When Gov. Lawton Chiles decided to let Florida’s “Defense Of Marriage Act” become law in 1997, he foresaw what’s going on in America today regarding same-sex marriage.

Imagine that you are lying on a stretcher, in horrible pain, with only minutes to live. Your ambulance driver is almost frantic to get you to the hospital because he knows that your life is ebbing away, and the only way to save you is to take you to the emergency room where the doctors and nurses are waiting to help you.But, he can’t make much progress because the vehicles around him are not yielding to the ambulance’s flashing lights. Other drivers barely budge as the emergency vehicle’s siren blares futilely; your driver feverishly honks the horn, but his path remains blocked.

Council needs help

As we make our weekly grocery lists this week and wonder what to do with leftovers crowding our refrigerator, let us not forget those seniors and disabled among us in Osceola County who do not even understand those issues because their refrigerators are almost bare and they never make a grocery “list.”
