The Four Chaplains were four World War II chaplains who died rescuing civilian and military personnel, giving up their own life jackets when supplies ran out as the American troop ship SS Dorchester sank on Feb. 3, 1943. The chaplains included Methodist Minister, the Reverend George L. Fox, Reform Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, PhD, Catholic Priest, Father John P. Washington and Reformed Church in America Minister, the Reverend Clark V. Poling.

Each of the four chaplains were posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart. Congress created a medal for them, with the same weight and importance as the Medal of Honor.

A local Four Chaplains Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m., at the American Legion Post 80, 1019 Pennsylvania Ave. For more information, call Dave Nigh, Chaplain Post 80 at 321-697-6972 or 407-979-4388.
