Seniors and disabled residents who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic are encouraged to apply for a new program that launched this week.

“The pandemic left many seniors isolated and feeling mentally, physically and financially vulnerable. I’m happy to spearhead this program, that aims to help with finances, and can also ease the mental stress some people may be enduring because of COVID-19 and its impact on the economy,” Commission Vice Chairwoman Viviana Janer said. “This assistance is very important for the residents of Osceola County where many low-income older adults and disabled persons are at risk of being overlooked and underserved.”

The program takes advantage of newly-implemented rules for Federal assistance. Previously if a child was paying expenses – such as rent and utilities for an elderly parent – and they lost their income, the parent could not apply for help. The new program addresses this issue.

Because it is aimed at seniors and the disabled, only paper applications are being accepted. Up to six months of assistance will be available for rent/mortgage and utilities. Payments will be made directly to the mortgage company/landlord and utility company.

Application packets are available at Human Services (1392 E. Vine Street in the Mill Creek Plaza in Kissimmee) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m.–noon and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m.

As a reminder, the elderly and disabled can be vulnerable to scams. This program is strictly done in person at Human Services. Residents should not give any personal information such as social security, bank or healthcare information to anyone over the phone. Anyone with questions about the program can call 407-742-8403.
