A man driving a Tesla over the speed limit on Hickory Tree Road Thursday morning was killed when the car struck a tree and burst into flames, Florida Highway Patrol reports.

The incident occurred around 8:25 a.m. on Hickory Tree just west of Nursery Road, just west of U.S. Highway 192. FHP said the Tesla Model X was traveling eastbound approaching a curve in the road that the driver failed to negotiate. The car ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree the FHP report states. The impact caused it to become engulfed in flames.

The driver, only currently identified as a male, was pronounced dead on scene. The Medical Examiner's office had yet to positively identify the victim as of early Thursday afternoon, and gave no information to the driver's age or residence. FHP says the crash remains under investigation.
